Introductory guide for evaluating interventions
The Evaluation of weight management, physical activity and dietary interventions, published by Public Health England (PHE) provides an introduction to the evaluation of public health programmes and interventions for practitioners who are new to evaluation or wish to refresh their knowledge on the subject.
This guidance is designed for practitioners who are interested in evaluating their projects or programmes. Although designed for weight management, physical activity and dietary interventions, the guidance can be applied to other public health areas.
In this document, there is a brief introduction detailing the importance of evaluation and the different types of evaluation followed by a six step guide which gives information on planning, designing and conducting an evaluation:
- Step 1: Planning
- Step 2: Setting objectives
- Step 3: Selecting indicators
- Step 4: Design methods and collect data
- Step 5: Analysis
- Step 6: Reflection and sharing
This introductory guide is part of a series of documents published by PHE to support the evaluation of programmes. The Standard evaluation framework for physical activity interventions is also part of this series and provides further information on the type of data that should be collected when undertaking a thorough assessment of physical activity programmes to promote individual or group level change.
