Exploring... What influences adults to be active?

Several factors can influence adults' activity patterns on different levels, for example, individual, social, political or environmental. These interact and play a key role in determining whether an individual will be active or not. Gaining an understanding of these factors offers an insight into why some adults are active and others are not.

This fact sheet looks at a number of factors that influence people's physical activity behaviour, including:

  • demographic factors - such as age
  • environmental factors - for example, safe road crossings
  • psychological factors - eg, stress levels
  • social factors - such as support from family and friends
  • workplace factors - working long hours.
